School Firewalls

One of the biggest blockades to accessing technology is schools is school! Diigo, WordPress, YouTube are just a few of the sites that force me to come face to face with the dreaded firewall. The one constant that binds these sites together is that they have the potential to allow students to access material that they have not been directed to utilize. You cannot go to You Tube, because the wayward student may drift off to search for videos or other salacious content.

There are ways to avert the firewall, but often they require a teacher to be a bit craftier that one chooses to admit. I have had the email conversations with the IT department, begged, pleaded, and negotiated. Nothing. I am told that there are some sites that just cannot be accessed. There has to come a point when teachers are held responsible for utilizing these sites effectively and making professional judgments regarding content and application. To block the sites without recourse is akin to throwing out the baby with the bath water. Let’s train and supervise, not ban applications in their entirety.
